Sørvágsvatn Is A Breathtaking Lake That Is Much Higher Than The North Atlantic Ocean

Lo and behold, Sørvágsvatn, the largest lake on Island Vágar of the Faroe Islands. Besides its natural beauty and aura, its head-spinning and mesmerizing illusions will amaze you as it appears much higher than the North Atlantic ocean.

The picture above shows the breathtaking illusion. It seems as the lake is more than 100 meters above the ocean, whereas, in reality, it sits only 30 meters above sea level.

However, the photo below clearly shows that the lake lies on a gentle slope. It is the breathtaking view of the Bøsdalafossur waterfall, from where the Lake flows out into the Atlantic ocean.

The illusion is further enhanced due to the higher cuestas surrounding the Lake Sørvágsvatn, measuring 252 and 376 meters on each side.

The name of the lake means ‘The lake of Sørvágur, ’ and it is stretched on an area of 3.4 square km.

The island is also historically important, as it was located at key geopolitical point during the British occupation of Faroe Islands in World War II. The airfield on the Faroe island was used against potential German warships.
