An incredible restaurant in Asheville, North Carolina will be opening soon by the name of Smoky Park Supper Club. It is located on Riverside Drive and is set to open in a couple of months. It’s built from 19 shipping containers by shipping container construction firm SG Blocks, and it will feature a wood-fired food menu by Asheville farm-to-table pioneer Mark Rosenstein.
The restaurant in now in its final stages, with work being done on the interior, bar furnishings, and artwork. The restaurant is the largest in the country to be built using shipping containers. The containers first had to be stripped off their exterior coatings, before having fresh coatings applied and being prepared for installation. It took three days to install all 19 containers. The initial contract and design work began back in 2011. The restaurant is due to open this spring.
SG Blocks vice president of sales and business development, David Cross says it takes 8,000 kWh of energy to melt down used shipping containers and only 500 kWh to reuse them. The construction of the Smoky Park Supper Club saved a potential 142,500 kWh of energy.
