Smart Design Of The New Bowl-shaped UAE Stadium Ensures It Remains Naturally Cool In Summers

One of the major architectural challenges of designing the largest stadium in UAE was to ensure that the structure could be kept cool in the blistering desert heat of the country.

Perkins+Will designed a smart stadium that could lower the costs of keeping the stadium cool. The architects came up with the idea of an elevated bowl-shaped stadium with a porous outer skin to fend off the heat. The design keeps the stadium naturally cool without allowing it to be heated up by the sun or letting in the irritable sand.

The entryway for the Mohammed bin Rashid Stadium has water features below it that cool off the incoming air by acting as a thermal sink. The stadium could seat 60,000 people and will be used as a mixed-use sports complex. 

 

 

The massive sports complex in Dubai will also provide training facilities including the warm up areas and a practice pitch. The stadium will include a car park for 5000 vehicles, a museum, restaurants, multipurpose sports hall, and public parks. See more images of the Perkins+Will design below:
