Samsung has taken the idiom ‘you are what you eat’ and given it a whole new meaning with its app called ‘refrigerdating.’ The idea is for users to upload pictures of their fridge’s contents and then to swipe until they find the perfect match!
Gone are the days when online dating was considered embarrassing. Couples that had hooked up online usually came up with an alternate version of an in-real-life story to keep the truth hidden. However, those days are long past us, and the dating apps have actually become a part of our lives. Most of the dating apps ask the user to upload their pictures along with a short bio and then the process of swiping begins. Other users go through your pics and bio if they find something that they like; you both start talking.
Samsung decided to revolutionize the dating paradigm by discarding the idea of selfies and asking its users to take a picture of the contents of the refrigerator. The refrigerdating app was made as part of a promotion for the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator launch. You take the photo of your refrigerator’s interior and then make your way through other users’ pictures. You can swipe right for approving a picture or left for rejecting. Once you match, you can talk to your food-date. The owners of the Family Hub refrigerators don’t have to use their smartphones even; the fridge features a monitoring camera that can take the picture for you!
According to Samsung, the inside of our refrigerators show our most authentic selves. Elin Axelsson, PR manager at Samsung Electronics Nordic based in Sweden, said, ‘We hope people can meet under more honest or transparent circumstances with the help of the contents of the fridge because that can tell you a lot about the personality.’
The app was launched in Sweden first and is now readily available all around the world. You don’t even need to own a Samsung device to use it.
