On Tuesday former President Donald Trump launched Stargate, which represents a $500 billion AI infrastructure project to create artificial general intelligence (AGI) inside the United States. OpenAI (led by Sam Altman), together with SoftBank and Oracle, collaborated on the ambitious project, which Trump praised as vital for sustaining U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence research.
According to Sam Altman, Stargate represents the key to developing artificial general intelligence within the United States. OpenAI stated it will allocate $100 billion instantly to develop new infrastructure. Elon Musk, who leads OpenAI’s opposition, quickly challenged the financial stability of this project. Elon Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter) that SoftBank secured less than $10 billion in funding but provided no proof to back his statement.
Altman made a firm statement to reject Musk’s baseless financial assertions, which he knew were untrue. Stargate’s funding received his support because he believed it would advance national progress. According to Altman’s letter to Musk, Stargate represents a beneficial national asset that should be the focus of Musk’s DOGE leadership responsibilities.

Altman expressed a conciliatory tone by acknowledging Musk’s influence while extending an invitation to view Stargate’s initial infrastructure project site. The two tech leaders founded OpenAI together in 2015 but separated in 2018 while their relationship remained tense. Musk has attacked OpenAI because it chose to work with Microsoft for profit while pursuing legal action against the organization. The AI ventures of xAI and Tesla continue to be Musk’s primary focus, but Altman insists on making Stargate the cornerstone of America’s AI development strategy.
