Russia Has Decided To Stay On The ISS Until 2028, Prolonging Its Lifestyle

The international space community feels at ease by Russia’s recent decision to extend its membership in the International Space Station (ISS) until 2028. Concerns regarding the station’s survival arose after Russia stated its plan to leave the ISS cooperation after the crisis in Ukraine in July 2022.

Russia plays a vital role in the ISS project, providing hardware contributions and essential services such as transporting supplies and maintaining the station’s orbit. The Russian Progress cargo ships are responsible for delivering crucial resources and ensuring the station remains in the correct orbit. Additionally, the Zvezda module, constructed by Russia, houses the primary life support systems of the ISS.

The worry was that Russia’s departure from the partnership would lead to the dismantling of its modules and the potential construction of a new space station. Such a risky endeavor could have resulted in the premature deorbiting of the ISS, leading to its controlled reentry and destruction five years ahead of schedule.

However, NASA’s recent announcement regarding Russia’s continued participation until 2028 brings hope. It guarantees the safe operation of the ISS until 2030, when all international partners are expected to vacate the station before its final deorbiting.

Announcing her support for the extension, Robyn Gatens, director of the International Space Station Division at NASA Headquarters, emphasised the importance of the ISS as a platform for scientific research and exploration. By extending the life of the ISS, scientists can benefit from more than 20 years’ worth of experiments and technological demonstrations, opening the door to even more important discoveries.

While the geopolitical situation remains uncertain, with tensions persisting between Russia and the West, this decision brings stability to the remaining years of the ISS’s lifespan.
