Portable Wind Turbine Fast-charges A Smartphone In Under 20 Minutes

The need for reliable, portable energy solutions has grown in an age where our mobile devices are ever-present, even in nature. While venturing into the wilderness, the Shine 2.0 3-in-1 portable wind turbine offers renewable energy in a compact form suitable for both outdoor enthusiasts and those preparing for emergencies.

The Shine 2.0 folds into a compact size, comparable to a 1-liter water bottle, making it easy to transport in a backpack. It weighs just around 3 pounds (1.36 kg) and is designed for convenience and mobility. In addition, the turbine is weather-sealed to IP54 standards, ensuring durability in various outdoor conditions.

Equipped with three 23.6-inch (60-cm) composite-reinforced blades, the Shine 2.0 can be paired with a 6-foot-high tower mount, complete with an integrated level. The turbine automatically aligns with the wind and can generate up to 50 watts of power when winds reach speeds of 28 mph (45 km/h). According to the manufacturer, this energy is enough to fully charge a smartphone in just 17 minutes or power a laptop in under 2 hours. However, in lighter wind conditions, such as an 8 mph breeze, recharging a laptop could take more than 75 hours.

Real-time performance monitoring is made possible through a companion mobile app, thanks to Bluetooth connectivity. Furthermore, the turbine includes a 12,000-mAh Li-ion battery, which serves as a power bank, allowing users to store and access power on the go. This battery supports fast charging of up to 75 watts for devices such as phones, laptops, cameras, and drones via a USB-C port. Aurea offers optional adaptors to extend compatibility for those needing to power larger stations, such as those from Jackery, EcoFlow, and Bluetti.

As Rachel Carr, co-founder of Aurea, puts it: “Whether you’re exploring off-grid or facing a power outage at home, this turbine provides renewable energy to fast charge your devices when you need them most.”

The Shine 2.0 marks Aurea’s second foray into portable turbines, with their original model successfully funded through Kickstarter. The company has returned to the crowdfunding platform for this updated version, with pledges starting at CA$ 483 (approximately US$356). While crowdfunding always carries inherent risks, if everything goes according to plan, shipping is expected to begin in May 2025.
