People Spotted A ‘Celestial Spiral’ Over Oklahoma – It Turned Out To Be A SpaceX Rocket

A mysterious spiral in the sky above the US sky had people thinking they’d spotted something alien last night.

A spiral was photographed travelling across the Tulsa and Oklahoma City’s night skies on Monday evening and looked like something out of a sci-fi film. However, scientists have bunked rumours that this was an alien sighting and blamed Elon Musk instead.

According to a tweet recently, SpaceX deployed its Falcon 9 rocket into space before it touched back down at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

“Did you see the strange spiral object in the sky tonight around 7 pm? A satellite was launched from the Space X Falcon 9 rocket,” Meteorologist Clint Boone wrote on Facebook.

Blueish green spirals have appeared in the sky after previous SpaceX launches. They can happen due to venting of excess fuel after a Falcon 9 rocket drops off its payload in space. The venting can avoid an explosion after separating the rocket and the item it was carrying.

2 News’ Chief Meteorologist Mike Collier says the spiral is due to the rocket’s second-stage fuel release in the skies. This marks SpaceX’s fifth attempt to launch Falcon 9 after several weather delays and a scrub due to a wayward cruise ship.
