OpenAI Says Its AI Voice Assistant Is Now Better To Chat With

OpenAI has rolled out new updates for Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT, enhancing the AI assistant’s conversational flow and making it more engaging and less intrusive. The latest improvements aim to refine the user experience by reducing unnecessary interruptions and making interactions feel more natural.

Announced by Manuka Stratta, a post-training researcher at OpenAI, the update specifically addresses a common issue with AI voice assistants: interrupting users when they pause to think or take a breath. With this enhancement, free users of ChatGPT can now speak at their own pace without interruptions, while paying users, including Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro subscribers, will experience an even smoother, more refined conversation style.

A spokesperson for OpenAI told TechCrunch that the upgraded AI voice assistant for premium users is now: “More direct, engaging, concise, specific, and creative in its answers.”

The update comes amid growing competition in the AI voice assistant space. Startups like Sesame, founded by Oculus co-creator Brendan Iribe, have gained attention with hyper-realistic voice assistants, Maya and Miles. Meanwhile, Amazon is gearing up to launch its LLM-powered Alexa, further intensifying the race for next-gen AI assistants.
