OpenAI Is Pursuing A New Way To Fight AI ‘Hallucinations’

OpenAI has unveiled a new approach to combat AI “hallucinations,” a growing concern in the field of artificial intelligence. The company aims to address the issue of misinformation generated by AI systems, particularly in light of the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election.

The rise of generative AI, exemplified by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, has brought attention to the problem of AI hallucinations. These occurrences involve AI models fabricating false information and presenting it as factual. For instance, Bard made an untrue claim about the James Webb Space Telescope, and ChatGPT cited fake cases in a New York court filing. Such hallucinations pose a significant challenge, particularly in domains requiring complex reasoning.

OpenAI’s proposed solution is to shift the focus from rewarding a correct final conclusion to rewarding each individual, correct step of reasoning. By implementing process supervision, AI models can better detect and mitigate logical mistakes or hallucinations. This strategy aims to enhance the models’ capabilities in solving complex reasoning problems and make them more aligned with artificial general intelligence (AGI). OpenAI has also released a dataset of 800,000 human labels used to train the mentioned model, reinforcing transparency in their research.

Despite OpenAI’s efforts, some experts express skepticism regarding the effectiveness of process supervision in combating misinformation. They emphasize the need for more comprehensive evaluations and examinations of the dataset and examples provided by OpenAI. In addition, concerns are raised about whether OpenAI will implement their findings in their products and how accountable they are for the AI systems they release to the public.
