NASA and Google have announced that the tests with D-WAVE 2X have revealed a very fascinating fact; the quantum computer is 100 million times faster than any ordinary computer. Well, WOW! This quantum computer has been developed by Google and NASA jointly. The amazing record was achieved in a test that demanded D-WAVE 2X to find the solution to an optimization problem and it came up with the solution way faster than a conventional computer while using a single-core processor.
Quantum computers are among the list of top technological achievements that have been dreamt of and are moving closer to reality with every passing minute. The reason for such huge expectations is potential that these quantum computers hold when it comes to processing power compared to more traditional systems and their limited processing powers.
A quantum computers, like the name suggests, makes use of quantum mechanics to work. Conventional computers carry out calculations and process the information using bits that are made up of binary values, 0 and 1. The quantum mechanics makes use of qubits that are capable of taking up the value of 0 and 1 simultaneously. This seemingly simple tweak allows the quantum computers to be much more agile when it comes to heavy processing.
Here’s an example to help you understand just what kind of processing power we are talking about; what takes the D-WAVE 2X a second to process a conventional PC would take about 10,000 years! Ten thousand years! Google is interested in this technology in order to speed up the plethora of services that are being offered via Internet while NASA has plans of incorporating this technology to demanding tasks such as air traffic control, orbital calculations, dynamic behavior of Earth’s atmosphere and mapping of climate change.
