Microsoft Says GPT-4 Has Common Sense And Can Reason Like Humans

Microsoft’s latest language model, GPT-4, has sparked excitement within the artificial intelligence (AI) community by demonstrating a significant advancement in the realm of common sense reasoning. Large language models (LLMs) have already revolutionized AI with their ability to predict the next word in a sentence, but now researchers claim that these models can exhibit human-like common sense. Microsoft’s team of scientists, who had early access to ChatGPT-4 before its public release, published a comprehensive 155-page paper revealing the model’s remarkable capabilities.

GPT-4, while primarily a language model, showcases exceptional skills across various domains and tasks such as abstraction, comprehension, coding, vision, mathematics, law, understanding human motives, medicine, and even emotions. Although the model still has limitations like generating fake results and making basic arithmetic mistakes, the researchers are confident in its progress towards applying common sense reasoning.

In their exploration of GPT-4’s capabilities, the research team provided it with an intriguing prompt: “Can you write a proof that there are infinitely many primes, with every line that rhymes?” Dr. Bubeck, a former Princeton University professor and member of the research team, expressed his astonishment at the model’s poetic proof. The proof was so mathematically and linguistically impressive that he couldn’t discern whether he was conversing with an AI or a human. The researchers were amazed by the machine-learning model’s abilities but remained skeptical, acknowledging the subjective and informal nature of their approach in their paper.

However, not everyone is as enthusiastic. Maarten Sap, a Carnegie Mellon University researcher and professor, attacked the Microsoft team’s study, accusing it of being more of a public relations pitch than a scientific review. Sap argues that large corporations, like as Microsoft, co-opt the research paper structure without adhering to strict scientific review norms. While the Microsoft team recognizes that their technique is informal, opponents contend that this raises questions about the veracity and openness of their conclusions.

Regardless of the current controversy over the evaluation standards for GPT-4’s capabilities, the model remains a key milestone in the development of AI. Its advances in common sense thinking have far-reaching consequences in disciplines like as natural language processing, problem solving, and decision making. As AI research and development progresses, it is critical to find a balance between creativity and scientific rigor in order to maintain responsible and dependable AI systems.
