The new 2016 Mazda MX-5 was unveiled globally in Monterey, California after remaining one of the industry’s best kept secrets. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the MX-5, which is recognized to be the best selling roadster of all time. Holding a few similarities to iconic roadsters from British firms, like Austin Healey, the MGB and Lotus’ Elan, Miata/MX-5 has gone through a number of design modifications but has always been true to its original self.2016 Mazda MX-5 Unveiled

The architecture and underpinnings of the MX-5 were revealed to us at the New York Auto Show earlier this year. Mazda displayed the MX-5 chassis and drive-train, hidden amongst the array of Miatas. It’s the only piece of information that the company has divulged since then. But tonight they finally took the components to a packed house, somewhere in Monterey.

According to Derek Jenkins, the Mazda Design Director who hosted the event. “The re-design of the new MX-5 meant finding a balance between classic roadster styling and a new, modern take on design, But in the new car we hopefully have found that balance with a design that is dramatic yet still reminiscent of the original concept.”2016 Mazda MX-5 Unveiled2

Starting from the new nose on the MX-5, Jenkins pointed out the new hood line and how its more aggressive and a bit lower if we compare it to the previous models. The front end is sharper and more dramatic along with being lower. Above the hungry looking front grill sit the new tapered headlights. The grill flanked by chiseled duct openings reminiscent of a Mustang. The car has trimmed a significant amount of fat from the Series 3 models and also features a perfect 50:50 weight distribution. The latest model is 220lb (100kg) lighter than the older one, which is quite impressive.2016 Mazda MX-5 Unveiled4

Not only is the car structured well, it is also a bit wider, which enhances its ability to corner and increase handling. The added back width also provides the car with a design boost. Moving down the side, Jenkins highlighted the reworked hips and the dramatic rear taper-out back.

If you take the three quarter look at the vehicle, it does look a little bit like the BMW Z4 and has a touch of Honda S2000 in it as well. Hence, the car still retains its own unique identity and style. The A-pillar of the car remained blacked out again, which coincides nicely with the all-black interior. “The interior of the new MX-5 is nicely finished out but very much driver focused,” states Jenkins.

Specifications and options for the Japanese release indicate that the car is to be outfitted with a SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed manual gearbox which will be connected to a SKYACTIV-G direct injection petrol powered engine. Suspension will be double wishbone configuration, whereas a multi-link setup has been placed in the rear. The car will feature electric power assisted rack and pinion steering.2016 Mazda MX-5 Unveiled3
