Free-to-play mobile games are as you might have guessed from the name free to play. However, these are some of the most profitable apps due to the in-app purchases. One such example is Daigo, a 31-year-old gamer from Japan who spent $70,000 on his favourite game.
Sony Corp.’s “Fate/Grand Order” is completely free to download and play. It still generated a revenue of over $1 billion in a single fiscal year. It is due to dedicated players like Daigo. The man only stops playing when he is sleeping, driving or taking a bath. He is literally obsessed with the game and continues to pour money into it to keep him entertained.
“Some people spend $18 on a movie and feel moved. I’ve spent $70,000 on ‘Fate/Grand Order.’ But it moves me,” Daigo recently told the Wall Street Journal. “When we played the first chapter, many of us were moved to tears. The story zooms into each character. It makes you feel something for them. You want what you love, right?”
In the game, you can summon new servants by spending the in-game currency called Quartz. However, there is only a limited amount of currency that you can earn completing missions and if you want to speed up your progress, you can spend actual money instead.
Daigo mentioned that he spent $500 to get a character he really wanted and then spent a further $2,500 to level up the character to make it stronger. When asked how he managed to afford all this, he revealed that he had saved money that he earned from investing in stocks and futures. However, he still lives with his parents and they have no idea about how much money he spends on the game. “They don’t know how much I’ve spent on the game. I think it’s fine as long as I’m having fun,” he said.
Can you even consider spending such an outrageous sum on a game that is essentially free to play? You can meet the man in the video below:
