Luminser Lantern Uses Heat From Candles To Powers Its LEDs

A lantern that uses candles to power the LEDs sounds like a wasteful concept. Why not simply use the candle instead? Luminser lantern is one such lantern made by the Norwegian waste-heat reclamation company ThermTech. The answer to why not simply use a candle lies in the fact that the Luminser lantern powers an array of LEDs for up to six hours.

The devices that can convert heat into electricity have been around since the 19th century. There have been many examples over the years dating all the way back to 1940 when Russia was manufacturing kerosene lamps that used thermoelectrics to power radios in areas where there was no electricity.

There has been modern equipment as well, like the camp stove that uses burning wood to produce electricity. The company had the same idea in mind, but instead of burning wood, they reduced it to just a candle. Another reason to use the lantern and simply not the candle itself is that it can 15 to 20 times the light the candle alone would.

The lantern can be used both indoors as well as outdoors. It has been designed keeping that in mind. It is very light and weighs just one pound and measures 5.5 inches in height when it is being carried. However, it can extend to 9.8 inches high and 4.7 inches across when its legs are extended.

The Luminiser lantern is currently a Kickstarter campaign with the pledges starting from $77. If the campaign is successful and everything proceeds as planned, the lanterns will begin shipping in August. You can check out the campaign video here:
