Intel’s Drones Light Up The Sky At Winter Olympics And Make New Record

There are amazing displays of fireworks around the world and give rise to some breathtaking sights. Imagine fireworks that you can control. Intel’s drones are just that. The shooting star drones are giving new meaning to light shows and their latest performance was shown at the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

These Intel’s drones were first introduced in early 2016 and have only gone up from there. They claimed the world record for most drones in flight simultaneously with a fleet of 100. They broke their own record by increasing the number to 500 and now the number of shooting star drones at the opening ceremony was 1,218.

The drones were programmed to form snowboarders, Olympic rings and a bird flapping its wings. Intel was originally planning to launch these drones at the live event but resorted to playing a pre-recorded video at the event due to an on-spot logistical change.

The flight shown at the opening ceremony was actually recorded back in December, but Intel conveniently forgot to mention that and broadcasters are also choosing to ignore the fact. Intel is even celebrating the success on Twitter. “Could a world record be set even before the Olympic Games begin?” it asked on Twitter on February 8, knowing full well that the record was already in the bag.

Whenever the footage was recorded does not matter as it is still the most impressive example of shooting star drones on display and makes for an incredible light show. The drones are equipped with LEDs and weigh only 700g apiece. They can be programmed to follow specific flight paths and give rise to closely knit shifting patterns in the sky.
