The clock is ticking for Huawei, and after only two months it will be officially blocked from installing Google’s software on any of its new phones unless the ban is delayed for another two years. This means that Huawei has to work hard to find solid footing from where the company can bounce back, and it seems that Russia is going be that footing in the form of Aurora.
Ever since Washington placed Huawei on the trade blacklist, the company has been banned from procuring components and software from the companies based in the US. The Chinese phone manufacturer will soon also be unable to install Google’s Android, Play Store, and the core apps of Google on its phones.
A report has surfaced claiming that Huawei is considering Aurora, an operating system that has been developed on the open-source Sailfish platform from Russian developers intended to replace Android, as an alternative to Google’s Android for its smartphones. You should also bear in mind that Huawei has already shipped one million of its devices featuring the Hongmeng OS for users’ feedback on the Huawei’s OS.
The report comes from a Russian news outlet, The Bell, and according to it the Huawei Deputy Chairman Guo Ping conducted a meeting with the Russian Minister for Digital Development and Communications, Konstantin Noskov, and talked about the possibility of using Aurora in the upcoming smartphones of Huawei.
It has also been reported that the Russian President has also taken an interest in the matter and spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the possibility of Huawei working in collaboration with Russian companies. The report also claims that the Chinese tech company is already testing Aurora on its devices.
If Huawei does adopt the Sailfish OS, then it might be able to bounce back sooner than Washington had expected. China is already working with Russia for the 5G network development, and it would seem that it just might recover from the repercussions of being banned from the US market soon enough.
