Honda Has Readied Its First Electric Motorcycle For The Masses

With the introduction of its performance-focused electric motorcycle, the EV Fun Concept, at the EICMA motorcycle trade show in Milan, Honda is preparing to make a big impact in the electric motorcycle industry. Honda is well-known for its extensive range of conventional motorcycles, so its entry into the electric two-wheeler market is a significant change. The EV Urban Concept, an electric scooter intended for city transportation, is another prototype that is included with the EV Fun Concept.

The EV Fun Concept boasts the sleek styling of a naked sportbike, featuring smooth lines, a single-sided swingarm, and likely middleweight performance, suggesting acceleration on par with Honda’s 650cc models. Unlike many current electric models with swappable batteries, Honda opted for a fixed battery in the EV Fun Concept, allowing for a customized battery placement that maximizes space. Although this setup forfeits the convenience of swappable batteries, it enables Honda to design the bike for optimal weight distribution, enhancing urban rideability.

Both concepts are in support of CCS2 fast charging, so riders will have the benefit of quick recharging available at standard charging stations or home-installed EV fast chargers. The bike’s expected range is 62 miles (100 km), which could be lower than that of some of its competitors. This points to a smaller, lighter battery that makes the bike more maneuverable in the kind of stop-start traffic most urban riders face every day. Amongst other modern tech, the bike is belt-driven, with radial front brake calipers and an inverted front fork. These are to be monitored through a smartphone app for the bike’s motor and battery status.

Unveiling these electric models indicates the entrance of Honda into the electric urban mobility space. Honda has announced plans to make all of its motorcycles electric by the 2040s and to reach 30 new electric motorcycle models by 2030. These intentions push Honda to strive for a sustainable, electrified future.
