Google’s Bard Is Getting A Big Upgrade With The New Gemini AI

Google is making waves in the artificial intelligence (AI) landscape with its latest upgrade to Bard, the company’s generative AI chatbot and competitor to ChatGPT. The transformative update introduces Gemini, Google’s cutting-edge AI model, promising to elevate Bard’s capabilities to new heights.

Gemini, available in three sizes – Ultra, Pro, and Nano, exhibits the versatility to operate seamlessly across a spectrum of devices, from mobile phones to robust data centers. This adaptability positions Gemini as a powerful force in AI, offering an expansive range of applications.

The rollout of Gemini to Bard will occur in two phases. Initially, Bard will integrate a tailored version of Gemini Pro, enhancing its capabilities in English across more than 170 countries and territories. The second phase, slated for the following year, will introduce Bard Advanced, leveraging Gemini Ultra, Google’s most advanced AI model.

Before its public release, Gemini Pro underwent rigorous industry-standard benchmarks, outperforming Google’s previous model, GPT-3.5, in six out of eight assessments. This includes excelling in massive multitask language understanding tasks (MMLU) and grade school math reasoning (GSM8K). Despite GPT-3.5’s age, the benchmarks signify a significant leap in performance.

Sissie Hsiao, VP and GM of Assistant and Bard at Google, emphasized the magnitude of this upgrade during a press briefing, labeling it the “biggest single quality improvement” since Bard’s launch. The improvements encompass advanced capabilities in understanding and summarizing content, reasoning, brainstorming, writing, and planning.

Gemini Pro will initially power text-based prompts in Bard, with plans to expand to multimodal support, including text, images, and potentially other modalities in the coming months. Furthermore, 2024 will mark the debut of Bard Advanced, a groundbreaking experience powered by Gemini Ultra, capable of understanding and acting on various data types, including text, images, audio, video, and code.

This comprehensive upgrade aligns with Google’s commitment to refining Bard continuously. Recent enhancements include features like answering questions about YouTube videos, integration with Google apps, and the ability to cross-verify responses for accuracy.

As Google unveils Bard with Gemini, the AI landscape anticipates a new era of intelligent collaboration, setting the stage for further advancements in the field. The trusted tester program for Bard Advanced, launching early next year, demonstrates Google’s dedication to ensuring safety and reliability in AI applications. With Gemini, Bard is poised to become an even more indispensable AI collaborator, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in artificial intelligence.
