Google is making its Gemini AI more accessible by rolling out file upload and analysis features to free users. Previously limited to paying subscribers, this update allows anyone to upload documents for summaries, insights, and analysis.
With this update, users will notice a prompt stating, “Upload files to get quick summaries and actionable insights.” File uploads can be done via the Android app or through the Gemini website, where new options for Files and Drive now appear alongside Camera and Gallery. However, iPhone users will have to wait, as iOS support is currently absent.

Supported file formats cover a wide range of document types, including text files (TXT), code files (C, CPP, PY, JAVA, PHP, SQL, HTML), word processing files (DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF), and tabular data (CSV, TSV, XLS, XLSX, Google Sheets). Users can also directly pull files from Google Drive for quick content processing.
The feature is available exclusively for Gemini 2.0 Flash, meaning older versions like Gemini 1.5 do not support file uploads. Advanced subscribers using Gemini 2.0 get additional benefits, including a larger context window of 1 million tokens—enough to analyze 1,500 pages of text or 30,000 lines of code. They can also access the 2.0 Pro model for deeper insights.

Despite the broader availability of file uploads, premium features such as Deep Research, custom Gems, Saved Info, and Recall remain locked behind Advanced subscription plans.
