Google has announced a major upgrade to Android’s iPhone migration system that could remove one of the biggest pain points for users considering a switch away from Apple’s ecosystem.

Starting with Android 17, users moving from iOS to Android will be able to transfer significantly more data than before, including accessibility settings, alarms, apps with user data, call history, eSIM information, notes, passwords, wallpapers, WhatsApp chats, and even home screen layouts, according to GSMArena.

The expanded migration tools were announced during Google’s Android Show I/O Edition 2026 keynote and represent one of the closest attempts yet to create a near-seamless transition between the two rival mobile ecosystems. Historically, switching from an iPhone to Android often meant losing app data, settings, message histories, and other personalized content.

The rollout will initially be limited to select devices. Google says the upgraded transfer experience will debut first on Pixel smartphones and Samsung Galaxy devices, including upcoming foldables expected to launch with Android 17 and Samsung’s One UI 9 software later this year.

Samsung has already opened its One UI 9 beta program, suggesting some users could gain early access to the improved Smart Switch functionality before Android 17 sees a wider release.

The move also signals growing cooperation between Google and Apple on interoperability features, even as the companies remain fierce competitors in the smartphone market. Regulators in Europe and other regions have increasingly pushed major tech firms to reduce ecosystem lock-in and make it easier for consumers to move between platforms.

For Google, lowering migration friction could help Android manufacturers compete more aggressively for premium iPhone users. Features like eSIM transfers, password migration, and preserved home screen layouts reduce the psychological and technical barriers that often discourage people from changing ecosystems.

The update also reflects how smartphone competition is shifting beyond hardware specifications alone. As devices become more similar in performance and design, ecosystem convenience and data portability are becoming increasingly important battlegrounds.
