China-based GAC Group has launched the GOVY AirJet flying car with a commitment to reshape transportation and focus on sustainable air mobility.
Leveraging its automotive expertise and advanced in-house technology, GAC aims to deliver practical solutions for urban and intercity travel. The AirJet represents a significant advancement in the field, showcasing a sleek, composite-wing design that incorporates over 90% carbon fiber. This construction reduces its weight to just a third of a car body of the same size, enabling efficient electric flights. With vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, the AirJet combines functionality and versatility, transitioning mid-flight for optimized cruising efficiency.
The AirJet also reflects a strong focus on performance and safety. Powered by a high-performance electric drive system developed by GAC, it reaches a top speed of 155 mph while recharging in just 30 minutes. Inside, passengers are treated to a luxury cabin featuring a “1+1+X” seating arrangement and autonomous flight capabilities. Advanced safety measures, including redundant power systems, real-time monitoring, and obstacle detection, ensure secure operations during every journey.
GAC’s ambitions extend beyond individual flying cars, with its Robo-AirTaxi system designed to integrate aerial and ground transport seamlessly. This system employs the GOVY AirCar for short urban trips under 12 miles and the AirJet for longer intercity routes of up to 124 miles. Together, these vehicles aim to create a “40-minute Greater Bay Area life circle,” drastically reducing travel times and offering a more efficient alternative to traditional transportation methods.
Looking ahead, GAC plans to secure airworthiness certification for its eVTOLs by 2025, with production lines and pre-orders slated to follow soon after. Demonstration operations in select Greater Bay Area cities are expected to commence by 2027, positioning GAC as a leader in the commercialization of low-altitude mobility solutions.
The AirJet’s future potential is underscored by ongoing advancements in battery technology, with GAC anticipating that next-generation solid-state batteries could extend its range to nearly 250 miles. This vision, combined with GAC’s innovative approach to sustainable design, highlights the company’s commitment to pioneering smarter and greener transportation solutions.
