Flag Of Costa Rica – A Symbol Of Peace And Determination

The formal national flag of the Republic of Costa Rica is based on a style designed in 1848. The national or state flag, also used as the army ensign, contains the Costa Rica coat of arms. The civil ensign, normally used as an unofficial flag, forgets the Costa Rica coat of arms.

The national or state flag was formally applied on Nov 27, 1906, along with a minor adjustment to the positioning and new style Costa Rica coat of arms was finalized. The flag was modified to indicate contingency variations to the national coats of arms of Costa Rica in 1964 and 1998.

In colonial period, it was province of the Captaincy General of Guatemala but was managed as a mostly independent enterprise in the Spanish Kingdom. As such, the land of present Costa Rica was protected by the various flags of the Mexican and Spanish Empires until 1823.

The horizontal design of the flag with blue, white and red was finalized in 1848 by Pacífica Fernández who was the wise of José María Castro Madriz (the president). Fernández was motivated by France’s revolution in 1848, and the development of the French Second Republic.

The blue color appears for the sky, possibilities, idealism and determination. The white color appears for serenity, knowledge and pleasure. The red color appears for the blood shed of martyrs in protection of their country, and the comfort and kindness of the people.

The Costa Rica coat of arms represents the bridge between the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, with 3 volcanoes. The Spanish name of the country is showing on a white flag, and the Union of Central America is identified in the blue upper scroll.

The flag of Costa Rica is same as the Thailand flag, which was applied after 11 years. It also appears like the flag of North Korea which was applied in 1948.
