It is an intellectual property world out there and to protect your interests as well as stopping the considerable legal tussle after someone’s death over the rights to his content and pictures, Facebook has introduced a new concept that will allow you to nominate an heir to your account’s legacy and the permission to use everything it offers to the chosen one. But was it really necessary?
Unlike other countries, the USA has strict rules on using content, trademark material and pictures of any person even if he is deceased. So, generally, when one person dies, it initiates a heavy legal tussle between members of his family, team or social circle who lay claim to what the person left behind. Also, there is the emotional aspect since people believe that just like his material things, the dead’s social media accounts also belong to the heirs and they should be able to do what they want with it.
The Facebook product team had been receiving this suggestion for quite some time and went to work on it. They finally finished working on it nearly a year ago and quietly gave a new option on the Privacy panel. To activate it, you have to go to settings>security>Legacy contact and then choose your worthy heir. Also, it allows you to send a message to that person and telling him that he has been nominated as your heir but that isn’t mandatory. So, who have made you your heir and has anybody made you yet?
