Facebook Has Unveiled New Virtual Reality Workrooms – Here Is Why This Could Be A Great Idea

Imagine working in a virtual office setup, it can’t get cooler than this! (unless you’re an introvert and don’t want to interact with people, then we’re sorry)

Facebook recently unveiled its new project titled ‘Horizon Workrooms’ that makes use of Oculus, its virtual reality gear and allows employees remote collaboration through the wonders of virtual technology. Think of it as an advanced version of your Zoom video meetings and conferences where you’d be virtually interacting with others using a customized avatar without physically being in the same place. The company described the new project in a blog post and said, “Workrooms is our flagship collaboration experience that lets people come together to work in the same virtual room, regardless of physical distance. It works across both virtual reality and the web and is designed to improve your team’s ability to collaborate.”

The Oculus division has been largely used for enhancing the gaming experience for the customers using VR headsets but in recent years, its applications are being used for remote work, providing interactive tours online. Mark Zuckerberg has been seeking new ways to merge the social media platform with their hardware, gaming and virtual reality units to give rise to the digital world dubbed as the ’metaverse’, a new buzzword being circulated among many entrepreneurs and specialists. By creating ‘workrooms’, it takes them one step forward to making the metaverse a reality and plays a significant role in Facebook’s future as well.

With the ongoing pandemic and more people opting to work from home, even permanently now, this project comes at the right time and would give companies a great tool for employee bonding and communication even when they are miles apart. At the pace technology is evolving, we might soon be living permanently in the virtual world…
