Elon Musk’s Starbase In Texas Will Officially Become A City

The official recognition of Starbase as a city marks a major milestone in Elon Musk’s vision for a futuristic launch site. Residents overwhelmingly approved the incorporation of the area surrounding SpaceX’s Texas facilities in a vote held on Saturday. According to Cameron County records, 212 voted in favor, while only six opposed the measure.

Before SpaceX began purchasing land in 2012, the 1.6-square-mile area was largely uninhabited. Today, it is home to SpaceX facilities, company housing, and Musk’s personal residence. The area also features unique landmarks, such as “Memes Street” and a large statue of Musk, which was recently vandalized.

Of the 283 eligible voters in Starbase, the majority are SpaceX employees. Bobby Peden, a SpaceX vice president, will serve as the city’s first mayor, with two commissioners—also affiliated with the company—joining him in leadership. As a Type C city, Starbase officials are authorized to levy property taxes of up to 1.5%.

However, not all nearby residents are celebrating. Some have raised concerns over environmental degradation and restricted public access to local beaches. A bill under consideration by the Texas legislature could grant Starbase the authority to close Boca Chica Beach and State Park during rocket launches—powers currently held by Cameron County.

Environmental groups have voiced opposition to SpaceX’s presence, citing issues like light pollution, disruption to wildlife, and debris from rocket launches. In 2024, environmental authorities fined the company nearly $150,000. SpaceX dismissed the fines as a result of administrative disagreements.

This vote marks another chapter in Musk’s broader shift to Texas, where he has relocated several company headquarters due to more favorable regulatory conditions. As launch activities at Starbase increase, tensions between SpaceX, local authorities, and environmental advocates are expected to grow.
