Elon Musk Says AI Has No Use At SpaceX – At Least For Now

Elon Musk, a tech mogul synonymous with pushing boundaries, takes a surprisingly conservative stance on artificial intelligence (AI) in his space endeavors. At the recent Milken Institute Global Conference, Musk, a vocal advocate for AI’s potential to “foster human civilization,” downplayed its role in SpaceX and Starlink.

This apparent contradiction sparks curiosity. While Musk envisions AI as a powerful “truth-seeker” for humanity, he finds current AI capabilities lacking for the intricate challenges of space exploration. His skepticism stems from unsatisfactory results when testing advanced AI language models on space-related topics like the Fermi paradox and rocket engine design. For Musk, AI in space exploration seems like a science fiction trope – think HAL 9000 from “2001: A Space Odyssey” – rather than a near-future reality.

This stance contrasts sharply with his embrace of AI in other ventures. At his social media platform X, AI chatbots like Grok are already integrated, and news summarization powered by AI is on the table. Tesla aims to create Optimus, a sentient robot for labor, showcasing Musk’s belief in AI’s potential to revolutionize industries. However, for Tesla cars, AI development is on hold due to his ownership stake not being high enough for complete control.

Despite his reservations for space, Musk isn’t abandoning AI entirely. He heavily invests in general AI advancement through his company xAI, which aims to accelerate scientific discovery with AI’s power. This investment highlights a key aspect of Musk’s perspective: He acknowledges the potential dangers of AI, like misinformation and widespread job automation, but ultimately believes the positive possibilities outweigh the risks. He’s even gone on record stating the possibility of AI saving humanity, albeit with a small chance of ending it as well.

So, what can we make of Musk’s AI paradox? Perhaps it reflects a calculated approach. In the high-stakes arena of space exploration, proven and reliable technology takes precedence. For his other ventures, the potential rewards of AI justify embracing the cutting-edge, even with inherent risks. Ultimately, Musk seems to be an AI champion on Earth, but grounded and cautious when it comes to the final frontier.
