Elon Musk Bought Twitter After Then-CEO Refused To Ban This Account, New Book Says

The unfolding drama surrounding Elon Musk’s endeavor to acquire Twitter sheds light on the power dynamics within social media. Dubbed the “Chief Twit,” Musk’s pursuit to take control of the platform was fueled by a series of events triggered by a contentious Twitter account tracking his private jet.

According to revelations from the upcoming book “Battle for the Bird,” Elon Musk’s interest in acquiring Twitter was sparked after a request to shut down the @ElonJet account, managed by Jack Sweeney, was denied by former CEO Parag Agrawal. Sweeney’s account, dedicated to monitoring Musk’s private jet using publicly available data, incurred the ire of the Tesla CEO, prompting him to explore avenues for Twitter’s acquisition.

Reportedly, Musk’s attempts to persuade Agrawal to remove the tracking account were unsuccessful. Subsequently, Musk began purchasing Twitter shares, initiating discussions with founder Jack Dorsey. Initially eyeing a seat on the board, Musk eventually acquired the entire platform, sealing the deal for an astounding $44 billion in October 2022.

Assuming the mantle of “Chief Twit” upon taking control, Musk swiftly implemented organizational changes, ousting Agrawal and a significant portion of Twitter’s workforce. Notably, one of Musk’s primary objectives post-acquisition was suspending the @ElonJet account, alongside several journalists’ accounts, albeit facing resistance from Sweeney.

Despite facing legal threats from Musk, Sweeney resumed posting within 24 hours, dismissing Musk’s actions as a “bluff.” Musk’s assertive stance extended beyond Twitter, with interactions involving Taylor Swift, another public figure under scrutiny. Musk’s commentary on Swift’s team and her alleged attempts to control information underscored the complex dynamics.

Swift’s representatives raised concerns over Musk’s postings potentially jeopardizing her safety, particularly in light of past encounters with stalkers. The convergence of social media dynamics and real-world implications underscores the multifaceted nature of online interactions involving high-profile individuals like Musk and Swift.
