While everyone was busy buying the fanciest and cheapest things on Black Friday, one particular company was insistent on making you throw them into a hole! A company called Cards against Humanity, which is mainly popular due to its namesake board game, urged its fans to donate money towards digging of a useless ‘Holiday Hole’ to celebrate the holiday.
Who would be crazy enough to fund this, right? WRONG! Believe it or not, the incentive managed to get over $100,000. Yeah, that’s what you get for doubting the stupidity of the human race.
The “Holiday Hole” was dug to celebrate Black Friday, which based the campaign on an excavator digging the hole until the people kept on donating, with each dollar paying for half a second of digging time. The pointless hole, for some reason, appealed to many, and as a result, the company managed to raise a whopping $100,573. The excavator started on Friday and kept on digging until Sunday when the digging timer on the website finally expired.
The “deeper” meaning behind the practice was defined by the following answer to a question asking the purpose of the project in the FAQ section,
“A deeper hole. What else are you going to buy, an iPod? You’re supposed to think it’s funny. You might not get it for a while, but some time next year you’ll chuckle quietly to yourself and remember all this business about the hole.”
The company has made its name courtesy their antics on the Black Friday’s for many years now. Last year, they made people pay $5 for nothing whatsoever, and before that they literally sold bull shit for $6 a box. In celebration of 2013’s Black Friday, they raised the price of their party board game from $25 to $30.
Cards Against Humanity inventor Max Temkin said last year,
“We really hate Black Friday. It’s this really gross orgy of consumerism right after a holiday about being thankful for what you have — so we’ve always tried to think of funny jokes or comments we could make about the tradition.”
Never knew raising $100,000 was so easy!
