China is trialing a cutting-edge innovation in law enforcement: a 125-kg (276-lb) amphibious robot sphere capable of chasing down criminals at speeds of up to 35 km/h (22 mph) on land and water. Dubbed the Rotunbot RT-G, this futuristic device is the brainchild of Logon Technology and has been under development for several years.
The self-balancing spherical robot employs gyroscopic stabilization to maintain steady movement across diverse terrains, including mud, slush, and mild off-road conditions. It can also navigate water with ease, making it uniquely versatile. The RT-G is equipped with a suite of advanced sensors, including GPS for navigation, multiple cameras, and ultrasonic detectors to avoid obstacles and track targets. Its waterproof and buoyant design allows it to roll seamlessly into rivers and back out again, ensuring no terrain is out of reach. Currently being tested in a commercial zone in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, the robot comes equipped with an array of non-lethal crime-fighting tools. These include tear gas, smoke bombs, acoustic crowd dispersers, horns, and net shooters designed to incapacitate suspects. Videos of its operation show the RT-G being remotely controlled, though future versions may incorporate autonomous features for increased functionality.
The robot demonstrates impressive acceleration, reaching 30 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, and its robust build allows it to handle falls and rough conditions. However, it has limitations. Sharp turns appear wobbly, and it struggles with stairs and other elevated surfaces. These drawbacks may hinder its effectiveness in certain high-speed pursuits or complex urban environments.
Despite these challenges, the RT-G represents a significant advancement in police technology, offering a promising tool for non-lethal takedowns and suspect apprehension. As development continues, this rolling enforcer could become a cornerstone in modern policing, blending innovation with practicality in crime prevention.
