A Japan Airlines flight operating from Shanghai to Tokyo made an emergency landing on Monday night after a sudden pressurization system malfunction triggered a rapid descent of nearly 26,000 feet in under 10 minutes, according to airline and government reports.
The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 registered under Flight JL8696/IJ004, was being operated via a codeshare between Japan Airlines and Spring Airlines Japan. It took off from Shanghai Pudong Airport bound for Tokyo Narita, but diverted to Kansai International Airport in Osaka, touching down safely around 8:50 pm local time.
Japan’s transport ministry reported that an alarm had indicated a fault in the system responsible for maintaining cabin pressure. Suspecting potential cabin depressurization, the pilot declared an emergency and made a rapid descent per safety protocols.

Japan Airlines later clarified in a statement: “Flight JL8696 experienced a malfunction with the cabin pressurisation system… Although rapid decompression did not occur, oxygen masks were deployed as a precautionary measure.”
The aircraft descended from 36,000 feet to below 10,500 feet in less than 10 minutes. There were 191 passengers and crew onboard. Although no injuries were reported, multiple news outlets described a brief panic among passengers. According to The Standard, one passenger named Wang said the cabin became eerily silent as oxygen masks dropped from overhead panels, and the emotional state of flight attendants heightened the fear of a crash.
Though no physical harm was reported, the aircraft was grounded upon landing, and Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau reviewed the incident. Authorities concluded the malfunction did not qualify as a “serious” incident but confirmed an ongoing investigation is underway.

Japan Airlines stated: “We are actively cooperating with the Transport Safety Board and conducting an internal investigation to determine the root cause of the system malfunction.”
The airline has offered compensation to passengers. However, the event has reignited scrutiny over the Boeing 737 family, particularly as this model has been involved in several high-profile aviation accidents in recent years. Notable among them are the China Eastern Airlines Flight MU5735 crash in 2022 and a Jeju Air accident in South Korea in 2023.
