Chinese Car Maker Unveils ‘New’ Electric Truck Concept – And It’s A Tesla Cybertruck Knockoff

The Beijing Auto Show of 2024 was one of the biggest auto shows in history. An electric truck took over the market when Dongfeng, a major Chinese automaker, revealed their concept vehicle— the “2024 Concept Pickup Truck.” The similarities it shares with Tesla’s Cybertruck are astounding, but there is one difference that sets it apart as a potential game-changer: it comes at a significantly lower price.

Given China’s considerable EV subsidies, this imitation of Tesla’s Cybertruck by Dongfeng might disrupt the market by providing a more affordable option. All this while Tesla is already struggling with safety recalls for its own Cybertruck — an issue with the accelerator pedal that can be life-threatening.

Both trucks have a very similar appearance visually blunt, wedge-shaped design; steep front end; cargo bed above rear wheels. However, one distinctive feature sets the Dongfeng concept apart: a pop-up tent over a truck bed with a mattress, appealing to those who love adventure and camping.

It’s interesting to note that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has admitted that it was challenging to get the Cybertruck approved for usage on Chinese roads. This creates a big window of opportunity for Dongfeng’s cheaper counterfeit to take up a sizable portion of the Chinese market.

One thing, though, is still unknown: what’s within the Dongfeng idea. In contrast to other cars on display at the Beijing expo, this particular model had its inside completely hidden behind cordons. The mystery surrounding this raises questions about what features and capabilities Dongfeng might be planning for its rival Cybertruck.

Dongfeng has taken a risk by revealing this concept and openly opposing Tesla’s hegemony in the electric truck market. Given its distinct camping feature and possible cheaper price point, Dongfeng’s Cybertruck imitator may be able to seriously threaten Tesla’s market share, especially in China. Even though the exact features and performance numbers are yet unknown, it is obvious that the electric truck market is becoming more competitive, and China is going to be a big player in it.
