China Debuts World’s First Two-Way Brain-Computer Interface With 100x Efficiency

Chinese scientists introduced the world’s first two-way adaptive brain-computer interface (BCI), which provides 100 times greater efficiency than typical BCIs. The researchers at Tianjin University and Tsinghua University developed this system, which provides practical possibilities for medical and consumer devices.

The new technology surpasses traditional BCIs because it establishes a learning process between brain signals and machine systems. The co-evolutionary process between brain and machine results in stable long-term performance, which improves BCIs for everyday practical use. The study marks the first instance of brain-computer co-evolution research along with its successful implementation according to Xu Minpeng who served as a study co-author.

The technology of brain-machine interfaces began assisting people with disabilities through brain signal control in the 1970s. Modern applications of BCIs include gaming operations and drone management as well as hands-free technological systems. Current BCIs operate in a one-way direction because they do not allow brain feedback, which could enhance control capabilities. The performance of this system decreases as time passes.

Scientists created a dual-loop system with memristor chips to solve this problem because memristor chips operate efficiently and simulate neural networks. The system operates through two essential loops which maintain a machine learning process for decoder adaptation to brain signals and a brain learning process that provides real-time feedback for control enhancement.

The new BCI system achieved both accuracy improvements of 20% and extended operational stability during six-hour testing sessions involving ten participants. The system provides users with four degrees of freedom to execute complex movements, which include multidirectional movement and rotation.

China leads the world in BCI technology development as it challenges similar initiatives from both the United States and Europe. This advancement enables two-way communication, which brings BCI systems closer to medical rehabilitation applications and consumer electronics integration.
