It looks like that the Chinese engineers will soon own the world of technology, courtesy their incredible discoveries and inventions every day. And today was no different as a leading Chinese research centre, The Sunway TaihuLight, announced a new world record in computing speeds.
The research centre claims to have successfully manufactured a supercomputer that can work on triple the speed of the current fastest computer. The technology behind this amazing achievement has been kept under the covers, as the engineers used a novel chip technology to craft the TaihuLight.
Center director Dr Guangwen Yang said in an interview,
“As the first number one system of China that is completely based on homegrown processors, the Sunway TaihuLight system demonstrates the significant progress that China has made in the domain of designing and manufacturing large-scale computation systems,”
The TaihuLight carries an astounding 41,000 chips and 26 processor cores, which amounts to a staggering 10.7 million cores. This breakthrough has overcome the previous record holder, Tianhe-2, which was also the brainchild of Chinese engineers.
Tianhe 2 held the top spot for supercomputer speeds for the last three years and is located at the National University of Defense Technology. The impressive computer can perform 33.8 quadrillion calculations in a second.
And just if you were wondering, the next non-Chinese supercomputer hails from the U.S., but the current TaihuLight is about five times faster and powerful than the U.S. version.
