ChatGPT’s Huge Running Cost Is Threatening OpenAI’s Future

OpenAI, the company famous for its ChatGPT AI chatbot, is in trouble financially. They might even go bankrupt.

According to a report by Analytics India Magazine, OpenAI spends a massive $700,000 every day to operate ChatGPT, which is one of their main AI services. ChatGPT is a chatbot that can have realistic conversations on many topics using a smart language model called GPT.

But, even though ChatGPT is really good at what it does, it hasn’t made enough money for OpenAI. OpenAI tried to make money from newer versions of GPT, like GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, but that hasn’t worked well.

The report also says that fewer people are using OpenAI’s services. In July 2023, the number of visitors to the ChatGPT website dropped by 12% compared to June. This doesn’t count the people who use OpenAI’s tools to add GPT to their own apps.

However, OpenAI’s tools are facing competition from free and customizable models like LLaMA 2. These models can be changed to fit specific needs, unlike OpenAI’s paid versions.

The report also talks about a conflict between Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, and the rest of the company. Altman is worried about AI causing problems if not controlled by rules. But OpenAI wants to make more advanced AI and money. Even though Altman is worried, OpenAI is still trying to make money with its GPT-4 model. But they’re not making a profit yet. They’ve lost $540 million since ChatGPT was made.

OpenAI got a $10 billion investment from Microsoft and others, which helps for now. But the report says their plans to make $200 million in 2023 and $1 billion in 2024 don’t look real because they’re losing a lot of money. One option for OpenAI is to go public (IPO), which could let a big tech company buy them. But there are problems, like not having enough good workers and strong competition.

OpenAI is facing a lot of people leaving. They’re not firing people, but many of their best workers are getting jobs at other AI companies. Another problem is other AI companies, like Google and Meta. But people forget about Elon Musk and his AI projects. He’s even making a chatbot to compete with ChatGPT. Musk spent a lot of money, over $10 million, on powerful computers for his AI.

There’s also a problem with getting enough powerful computers because lots of companies want them. Some Chinese companies have ordered $5 billion worth of AI chips. Altman says there are not enough computers to make their AI better. OpenAI wants to make a new model called ‘GPT-5’, but because of these problems, the quality of ChatGPT is going down.

With all these problems – not making enough money, losing users, struggling to make good products and more – it’s clear that OpenAI is in a tough spot and needs a plan to start making money.
