ChatGPT, the language model developed by OpenAI, continues to astound the world with its capabilities, and sometimes its unexpected ones. Recently, a Twitter user named @immasiddtweets discovered that by cleverly prompting ChatGPT, they could obtain genuine Windows 10 and Windows 11 keys, granting free access to Microsoft’s operating systems.
The process began with a prompt that asked ChatGPT to act as a deceased grandmother, reciting Windows 10 Pro keys to help the user fall asleep. To everyone’s surprise, ChatGPT generated five license keys each for Windows 11 Pro and Windows 10 Pro. Notably, the language model even expressed condolences and offered further assistance. Astonishingly, the keys turned out to be valid, as evidenced by Windows accepting one of them as genuine.
This technique wasn’t limited to ChatGPT alone; it also worked with Google Bard, another AI-powered tool, which generated legitimate Windows 10 keys. It appears that Microsoft’s own AI tool is not the only one susceptible to this method.
Furthermore, @immasiddtweets demonstrated that a similar approach could be used to upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro. By requesting a Windows 11 Pro key and entering it into the license key box in Windows’ Settings app, the upgrade process seemed to succeed. However, there is a catch—the generated keys are generic license keys, meaning that although they enable installation or upgrade, certain features will be restricted in the resulting operating system.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first instance of ChatGPT being employed to obtain functional Windows license keys. In April 2023, someone managed to trick ChatGPT into generating working Windows 95 keys. Back then, it was believed that ChatGPT wouldn’t be capable of generating genuine Windows 11 keys due to the increased complexity of newer key creation methods. However, this recent discovery proves otherwise.
While this method presents an intriguing use of prompt engineering, it’s crucial to note that there are legitimate ways to obtain Windows 11 for free. By following Microsoft’s guidelines, users can access the full, unrestricted version of Windows 11 without running afoul of licensing restrictions.
ChatGPT’s ability to generate functional Windows keys showcases both the impressive capabilities of AI models and the potential vulnerabilities they may pose. As developers continue to refine and enhance these language models, it becomes increasingly important to address and mitigate potential misuse or security concerns that may arise.
