BYD’s new flagship electric SUV, the Datang, has secured more than 30,000 orders within its first 24 hours of presales. The full size, three row SUV starts at around $36,500, positioning it well below similarly sized electric SUVs while offering a long driving range and high power output.

The vehicle was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, where BYD showcased a broad lineup of new models. The Datang quickly emerged as one of the most talked about launches at the event, combining size, performance, and pricing in a way that stands out in the current EV market, as reported by Electrek.

At over 5.3 meters in length, the Datang is slightly larger than competitors like the Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9. It offers seating for seven passengers in a 2+2+3 layout, targeting families and buyers looking for a spacious interior. Inside, the SUV features a multi screen dashboard setup along with a large roof mounted display for rear passengers.

Performance varies by configuration. The single motor version delivers up to 370 kW, while the dual motor setup reaches a combined 585 kW. In addition to fully electric variants, BYD plans to offer plug in hybrid versions under its DM-i and DM-p systems, expanding the model’s appeal to buyers not ready to fully transition to electric.

One of the more notable features is BYD’s updated Blade Battery 2.0 paired with its new Flash Charging system. The company claims the SUV can achieve up to 950 kilometers of range under the CLTC standard, with charging times as low as five minutes under optimal conditions. While real world performance may vary, the figures suggest a focus on reducing range anxiety and charging downtime.

The Datang also includes advanced driver assistance features through BYD’s God’s Eye B system. A roof mounted lidar unit supports functions such as highway navigation assistance and automated parking. The vehicle is further equipped with the Disus A intelligent suspension system and dual chamber air suspension, aimed at improving ride quality and handling.

The strong early demand highlights growing competition in the global EV market, particularly from Chinese manufacturers offering high specification vehicles at relatively lower price points. As production ramps up, the Datang’s reception may provide a clearer indication of how pricing and feature bundling are reshaping buyer expectations in the electric SUV segment.
