Elon Musk recently made a bold claim about the new Tesla Roadster’s acceleration, and Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac expressed some slight skepticism about it in a comment on Facebook. Musk announced that the Tesla Roadster will be able to reach 60mph in less than a second, and many people have a hard time believing this.
Rimac, for his part, says that these numbers might be feasible, but they will come at a cost. He said “It is possible with thrusters,” but the thrusters could lead to issues with carrying around dead weight once the initial acceleration is complete. Despite these challenges, the Bugatti CEO said that thrusters “are really the only way to go”, as other methods, such as suction-fan technology, would be impractical due to the Roadster’s weight and the equipment required.
The Tesla website previously stated that the Roadster could reach 60mph in just 1.9 seconds, but the company has now “radically increased the design goals for the new Tesla Roadster.” according to Musk. He didn’t state how the car is going to achieve these record-breaking acceleration figures, though, and only time will tell whether these claims actually come to fruition when the Roadster is finally launched.
