In a groundbreaking collaboration between boat builder Tyde and BMW Designworks, the duo has unveiled the latest addition to the world of luxury yachts — the Open, touted as the largest hydrofoil luxury yacht for private individuals. Unveiled at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, this electric day yacht promises a revolutionary experience on the open seas.
The Open boasts impressive dimensions, with a hull length of 48 feet, a 7.76-foot beam, and an elevation of 11.5 feet above the waterline. This makes it notably larger than its counterparts, such as Candela’s C-8 and the SpiritBARTech35EF. The key highlight of this hydrofoiling marvel is its active hydrofoils, propelling it above the waves at a take-off speed, thanks to its two 100-kW motors. Cruising at a relatively quiet 25 knots and reaching a top speed of 30 knots, the Open promises an exhilarating yet eco-friendly voyage with zero emissions and minimal wake disruption.
The yacht houses a robust 400-kWh battery pack, offering a cruising range of up to 50 nautical miles at its optimum speed. The solar-paneled roof extends its range potential, embracing sustainability with each nautical mile. Drawing inspiration from BMW’s electric car technology, the yacht is expected to share a similar battery architecture, ensuring reliability and efficiency.
The interior of the Open is a testament to luxury and innovation. A two-seat helm incorporates cutting-edge technology, featuring a large touch display, voice-activated controls, AI-based collision avoidance, and infotainment. The single cabin is equipped with a big-screen TV, a work desk, and a spacious sleeping area for two, complemented by a fully equipped bathroom. While details about the meal prep area are pending, the yacht ensures a comfortable journey with 110 liters of fresh water on board.
According to Christoph Ballin, MD, and co-founder of Tyde, “With the Icon, we have shown how elegant and luxurious sustainable mobility on the water can be. The new model brings future-oriented mobility to the day yacht segment.”
The online configurator is now available for individuals who are itching to go out on this historic nautical journey, and production is expected to start this month, with the first deliveries planned for the fall of 2024. Heralding a new era in maritime discovery, The Open signifies a significant advancement in sustainable luxury yachting.
