While electric Vespas are available, many enthusiasts still cherish the classic combustion-engine models. The Retrokit presents an innovative solution for those who want to modernize their ride without losing the essence of their vintage scooters.
Developed by an Italian startup of the same name, the Retrokit conversion system consists of two primary components: a 7,000-watt rear electric motor that replaces the original gasoline engine and a removable 2,350-Wh lithium-ion battery pack that replaces the under-seat gas tank. This retrofit allows classic Vespa owners to embrace electric mobility without extensive modifications.

The kit retains the scooter’s original rear wheel and brake, and no structural changes are necessary. The conversion process is designed for efficiency, requiring only about four hours to complete. Optional features include an LED lighting system, a throttle, and a controller to ensure smooth operation.
Performance-wise, the Retrokit motor delivers 28 Nm (21 lb-ft) of torque at 2,500 rpm, offering a ride experience similar to either a 50cc or 125cc Vespa—without the need for clutching or shifting. Riders can toggle between three driving modes: Eco, Drive, and Sport. The Eco mode, enhanced by a kinetic energy recovery system, provides a battery range of approximately 82 km (51 miles) per charge.
A key distinction between the two versions lies in their top speeds. The 50cc-equivalent kit maxes out at 45 km/h (28 mph), while the 125cc version reaches up to 80 km/h (50 mph).

For convenience, Retrokit also offers a smartphone app that lets riders monitor speed, battery status, and driving mode. Additionally, those who prefer a dedicated display can choose from three digital console styles—round, oval, or rectangular—ensuring compatibility with different Vespa models.
According to Retrokit CEO and founder Alex Leardini, pricing starts at $3,500, with international air shipping available. This electrification kit provides a sustainable yet nostalgic way for Vespa owners to ride into the future while preserving the iconic charm of their scooters.
