Fake Kidnapper Used AI To Clone A Teen Girl’s Voice In A Call To Her Mother, Report Says

Artificial intelligence has reached new heights of deception as scammers have begun using AI to clone voices in phone scams, causing immense distress and fear for unsuspecting victims. One such victim, Jennifer DeStefano of Scottsdale, Arizona, fell prey to this horrifying scheme when she received a call from an unfamiliar number, which she almost ignored. However, when she heard her 15-year-old daughter Brie’s voice on the other end, sobbing and pleading for help, she picked up the call in a panic.

The voice on the other end claimed to have kidnapped Brie and demanded a ransom of $1 million. DeStefano was shaken to her core as she heard her daughter’s voice in distress, along with the voice of a man who threatened to harm her daughter if the ransom was not paid. The scammers were relentless, even lowering the ransom to $50,000 when DeStefano said she did not have the money. The situation was made more convincing by the fact that the voice on the phone sounded exactly like Brie, with the same inflections and cries for help.

DeStefano, in a state of panic, was convinced that her daughter was in danger and complied with the scammers’ demands. It was only when she sought help from one of her fellow moms and called 911 and her husband that she realized Brie was safe and sound on her ski trip. The entire call had been a meticulously crafted hoax using AI to clone Brie’s voice, simulating her cries for help like a case of long-distance ventriloquism.

This incident sheds light on the rising trend of caller-ID spoofing schemes and the alarming use of AI in phone scams. AI has the potential to create incredibly realistic and convincing voice simulations, making it increasingly difficult for victims to discern between real and fake voices. The emotional distress and fear inflicted upon victims of such scams can be immense, as they are manipulated into believing that their loved ones are in danger.

Law enforcement agencies and cybersecurity experts are warning the public to be vigilant and cautious when receiving unexpected calls demanding ransom or threatening harm. It’s crucial to verify the authenticity of such calls by independently contacting the alleged victim and seeking help from trusted sources. Additionally, phone users can consider using call-blocking and caller-ID verification tools to safeguard against caller-ID spoofing.

As technology continues to advance, it’s important for individuals to stay informed and be aware of the potential risks and vulnerabilities associated with AI and other emerging technologies. While AI has the potential to revolutionize various aspects of our lives, it can also be exploited by malicious actors for nefarious purposes. It’s crucial to remain cautious and skeptical of unexpected calls or messages, and to take necessary precautions to protect oneself and loved ones from falling victim to such scams. The incident faced by DeStefano serves as a stark reminder of the dark side of AI and the need for continued vigilance in the digital age.
