AI Now Surpasses Humans In Almost All Performance Benchmarks

The intriguing picture of AI’s rapid growth is presented by Stanford’s AI Index Report. In areas like picture recognition, language comprehension, and even simple reasoning, AI has outperformed humans. The paper emphasizes the requirement for updated standards to account for this advancement and pinpoint fields in which humans remain superior.

While AI struggles with complex math and visual common sense, the pace of improvement is impressive. For example, AI performance on challenging math problems jumped from 6.9% to 84.3% in just two years. Similarly, visual commonsense reasoning saw a significant increase.

However, challenges remain. Large language models (LLMs) can still generate false information, a serious concern highlighted by a lawyer fined for using unverified AI-generated legal research. New benchmarks like HaluEval and TruthfulQA are being developed to address these issues.

The report also explores the remarkable progress in AI-generated images. Midjourney’s stunning Harry Potter images showcase the vast improvement in text-to-image generation over just 22 months.

The year 2023 saw a surge in AI development, with groundbreaking releases like Suno, Sora, and GPT-4. The future looks even more transformative, with GPT-5 potentially revolutionizing multiple industries.

There is no doubt about it: AI is here to stay. The AI Index Report documents the quick progress that indicates AI will keep evolving, making it more difficult to distinguish between the skills of humans and machines.
