A Chinese Hybrid EV Just Set An Insane World Record

Chinese automaker FAW has set a new world record as its Hongqi HS6 plug-in hybrid SUV completed a 1,445-mile journey on a single full tank and charge without refueling, earning a Guinness World Record for endurance and efficiency.

The record-setting drive began on October 30 in Shangri-La and ended in Guangzhou on November 3, passing through major cities such as Kunming, Baise, and Wuzhou. The feat highlights Hongqi’s engineering progress and commitment to building sustainable, long-range hybrid vehicles for a global market. By surpassing previous record holder Chery’s Fulwin T10, the Hongqi HS6 has raised the bar for plug-in hybrid SUV performance.

The HS6 PHEV combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor for a total system output of up to 495 horsepower in the all-wheel-drive version. The two-wheel model produces 225 hp, with a top speed of 127 mph. The gasoline engine alone generates 148 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque, operating at a thermal efficiency of 45.21 percent.

Buyers can choose between two battery options: 23.9 kWh or 39.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate packs. These deliver electric-only ranges of 94, 146, and 155 miles under CLTC testing, depending on configuration. Combined, the HS6 achieves a total driving range exceeding 1,000 miles, emphasizing Hongqi’s balance between performance, range, and fuel economy.

Inside, the SUV features a dual-screen layout that merges a central control display with a co-pilot entertainment screen, along with a digital instrument cluster and multifunction steering wheel. The interior design reinforces Hongqi’s push into premium territory, blending technology and comfort in equal measure.

Hongqi plans to launch pre-sales for the HS6 PHEV in China on November 15, with an eye on expanding into European and Middle Eastern markets. The brand aims to position the model as a competitor in the luxury hybrid SUV category, reflecting the growing ambition of Chinese automakers to challenge global players in both design and innovation.

FAW, Hongqi’s parent company, has also announced a stake in Chinese driver-assistance firm Zhuoyu as part of its broader strategy to advance in smart mobility and autonomous driving.

The Guinness record not only showcases the HS6’s engineering reliability but also signals how rapidly Chinese automakers are evolving from imitators to innovators in global automotive technology.
