10 Best Hygrometers

Modern hygrometers utilise the dew points or changes in electrical capacitance or resistance to measure the humidity differences as opposed to humidity measuring instruments (the cruder and less advanced instruments) which followed a strategic set of formulae to compute humidity.

” Leonardo da Vinci invented the first crude hygrometer in 1480, and polymath Johann Heinrich Lambert created a more modern version in 1755.”  – Wiki.

The following article lists the best hygrometers you can buy for your home or office. Check out this list of 10 best hygrometers and let us know your favourite in the comments section below.

10. Amir Hygrometer ($9.99)

This is an indoor humidity and thermometer sensor with a temperature range of  32 ~ 122°F ( 0 to 50°C); temperature accuracy: ±2°F/± 1°C and temperature display resolution of 0.2°F (0.1°C). The humidity ranges 10%RH ~ 99%RH with ±5%RH accuracy allowing 1%RH humidity display resolution. This mini hygrometer is compact and accurate and can be used in wide variety of places. The Min and Max buttons are designed for you to check records of highest and lowest temperatures as well as relative temperatures. It comes with a replaceable battery and is fairly accurate and functional as well as easy to setup.

“This little thermometer and humidity monitor seem to be fairly accurate so far. I have had Thai item for over a week now, and I have used in in multiple rooms. Every room I have taken it in too has had a different reading for temp and humidity. Which is to be expected, I live in a home that was built in 1942, and most of the rooms have been adding on over the decades. The furthest back room has to have its gas heater and window unit to keep up with the rest of the house. I have a working mercury thermometer in my son’s room; this thermometer humidity meter is always was within a degree or two of the mercury thermometer. Unfortunately, I don’t possess anything else in the house that monitors humidity, so there is nothing to compare that too. When I hold the device, the humidity control goes up a percentage or two, and it’s always higher in the basement. So, I would say it’s safe to assume it’s working. The aspects and feel of this device are very cheap. When you put the kick stand up and down in the back, it puts stress on the LCD screen. I don’t imagine it’s enough to stress to break the screen, but the screen does not appreciate it. The plastic case is mediocre, as long as this thing just sits in one place it will last a long time I suspect. I would buy this item again; I would recommend it to a friend needing a basic, easy to use, easy to read, accurate thermometer.” – Amazon’s Customer Review.

This is Thermor’s indoor hygrometer cum thermometer. The unit has an aluminium face with a nice display. It measures indoor temperature from -58°F to 158°F.  It doesn’t have a backlight and cannot be wall-mounted. A bit hard to read from sides but great to see indoor temperature whether it is hot or cold. Works great.

“I use this to monitor temperature and humidity in my music room where I keep many acoustic wooden string instruments. Dependable” – Amazon’s Customer Review.

8. Bjerg Instruments Hygrometer ($22.99)

This is an 8-inch diameter indoor and outdoor thermometer and hygrometer. The unit has an easy to read 5.5 inches diameter dial face with humidity gauge at the bottom. It displays Celcius and Fahrenheit temperature simultaneously and has a real glass lens and steel construction of varying styles. The unit boasts aesthetic looks; feels an exceptional quality and is sturdy.

Was delivered very fast. Nice metal case. A bit difficult to adjust. Need to remove three small screws from back, rotate to adjust the temperature (or humidity) and then replace screws. No instructions were included, but rather intuitive to figure out how to adjust. Seems good quality overall. ” – Amazon’s Customer Review.

7. Wrenwane Hygrometer ($9.97)

The unit is attractive, simple with no complicated controls. It uses large digits for display which can be seen by a short-sighted person as well as someone who is sitting across the room. The unit is simple to operate and uses two LR1130 batteries which are included. The Humidity Monitor can display Celsius or Fahrenheit as well as high, low recorded values. The controls are easy to figure out.

This humidity monitor is great! I live in a hot, humid place right now, and I like to see what the humidity is outside and also inside the house. It is very easy and straightforward to use and understand. It’s minuscule, so it will not take up any room. It’s white and a square. The LCD screen is very bright and large – which is what I need because my eyesight sucks. There are not any hard to figure out controls. You don’t even need any instructions lol. It comes all set up and on. There are two buttons. You can display in Celsius or Fahrenheit as well as High/Low recorded values. It comes with two batteries included. I love knowing the weather and making sure everyone is comfortable. I like to teach my kids about all of this – so this helps me with that too. I love this humidity monitor and would recommend them to anyone.” – Amazon’s Customer Review.

6. Extech Hygrometer ($50.21)

This is Extech’s big-digit, hygro-thermometer. The unit is dark green and white in colour with 10 to 99% RH humidity range and 14 to 140°F (-10 to 60°C) temperature range with ±4%RH; ±1°C/1.8°F accuracy respectively. It has a complete built-in stand, mounting bracket, sensor, and 1 AAA battery and calibration salt bottles (optional). Very accurate and a great price for a very sensitive instrument.

This was extremely accurate out of the box. The temperature was accurate to .1 degree, with reference to a high-end Netatmo unit. The humidity was off by 4%, which is within the Mfg. specs. I was able to calibrate it to 100% accuracy using a Boveda One-Step Kit. The surprising thing is how responsive this thing is. Just getting near it will change the readings, virtually instantly, no lag time. I think the fact this has an exterior sensor makes it far more responsive than one which is built into the unit, which many are.” – Amazon’s Customer Review.

5. Xikar Hygrometer ($19.99)

This is Xikar’s round digital hygrometer with brushed aluminium for a modern look (updated design). The unit works right out of the box with no calibration needed though it doesn’t hurt to calibrate it since the unit might have an error of few points (since it is transferred in different climates). It has a magnetic attachment, and the refresh rate is 10 seconds.

The newest model does not allow calibration. Xikar guarantees it to be within +-2%. I did the salt test, and it read smack dab on the money at 75%. Sweet.” – Amazon’s Customer Review.

4. Cigar Oasis Hygrometer ($23.79)

This is a digital hygrometer with advanced humidity sensors maintaining accuracy up to  +/- 1%. The unit is pre-calibrated and features the high, low, averages of humidity and temperature for up to three days. It has a secure magnetic mount and comes with a battery. It’s adjustable and more accurate than most analogue meters without the hassle of having to do a salt test all the time.

This hygrometer seems to be a winner. The display is smaller than the Xikar that I’m replacing. However, it’s still readable thru the glass top of my humidor. Unlike its predecessor (the Caliber III), this unit can be calibrated should you ever feel the need. However, these come factory pre-calibrated which I intend to leave untouched. The unit is small (about 1 inch wide, by about 4 inches long, by about 3/8″ inch thick.) It comes with a magnetic mount and sticks on a metal plate. Its update speed is slower than the Xikar above however that doesn’t bother me as I have much more confidence in its accuracy. I will update again after I’ve had it a few more months.” – Amazon’s Customer Review.

3. Ambient Weather Hygrometer ($55.94)

This is Ambient Weather’s indoor and outdoor, eight channel thermo-hygrometer with three remote sensors. The display reads and updates up to 8 remote sensors. Easy to read, standard price and allows you to tell humidity and temperature of different locations, all at the same time. The unit has integrated audible as well as visual alarms for temperature and humidity exceeding the pre-set values by you. The console displays temperature and humidity, minimum and maximum temperature and humidity, which can also be manually reset.

“Very helpful tool in identifying moisture issues in different parts of a house. I set one in the basement, one on the second floor and one on the third floor to keep track of humidity. Easily determined that I had an issue in the basement and garage area. Noticed that the humidity on the first floor was reduced significantly once I put in 2 dehumidifiers in the cellar. I original put in 1 dehumidifier and found it was not enough. Later I noticed that the humidity was going back up in the basement, and I went down to find that someone had unplugged one of the units to use an outlet. So I plugged it back in and watched the numbers go back down. This system will do as many as eight remote sensors.” – Amazon’s Customer Review.

2. Meade Hygrometer ($24.95)

This is Meade’s indoor and outdoor thermal and hygrometer. The enormous and bright LCD allows for easy reading across the room or from afar. The wireless sensors transmit temperature and humidity data from 100 feet afar. The unit receives data from 3 sensors. It has an easy setup, and temperature measurements are accurate. You can quickly toggle display from temperature to humidity and opposite and also has a memory for minimum and maximum recorded data such as temperature highs and lows. The unit comes with a remote that you place outside so you be informed of temp/humidity of the world outside. It uses lithium batteries.

Bought this as a replacement for a Honeywell that looks identical. I like this weather station a lot as I can monitor temp/humidity in different areas from my desk. It’s easy, and if it lasts as long as the Honeywell has, it’s a good deal” – Amazon’s Customer Review.
