For achieving convenience, a lot of companies are focusing on technological innovation in existing products. Everything is going intelligent, from your toaster to your toothbrush. Nowadays, most of the “smart” products are usually redundant, and just a way to keep with the prevailing trend, however, L’Oreal’s smart hairbrush is a spectacular addition to the family of smart devices. Withings and Kerastase—L’Oreal’s professional products—have created a hairbrush which can provide you in-depth information on the health of your hair, even more than your average hairdresser can.
The Kerastase Hair Coach Powered by Withings can record your brushing practices, and through a free accompanying smartphone app, it will give a breakdown of your hair’s health and tips on how you can improve it. A microphone is attached to the brush that listens to the sound of your brushing and then detects using a pre-fed database whether you are following correct or incorrect patterns.
The presence of three-axis load sensor adds to the functionality by measuring the brushing force on your hair and scalp and can provide real-time haptic feedback if you are going too hard. An accelerometer and gyroscope are attached to count brush strokes during your morning routine, and there are conductivity sensors in the bristles which will notify you whether your hair is wet or dry.
All this analysis is sent to your smartphone over wi-fi or Bluetooth, along with other environmental data such as temperature, humidity, UV, and wind. The received information helps you style your hair according to the local weather forecasts, and also gives an overall hair quality score. All this is available in about $200, and the company hopes they can roll it out sometime mid-2017.
