There are some magic moments when you suddenly notice that the weighing machine is showing lower weight than the previous one. You start to pat yourself on the back that you are “somehow” losing all that weight overnight. Maybe, the “weight fairy” just visited and took away the extra bags while you were asleep. Though these theories seem weird and unique, they surely don’t clarify the confusion in your mind. Today is the lucky day as we are going to explain the logic behind this weird observation.
If you have a habit of weighing yourself a couple of times each day, you would have noticed that your weight keeps on fluctuating throughout the day. The fact is that our body weight fluctuates by an amount of 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg) per day.
Most of the weight fluctuations can be pinned on our bodily functions like eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom. All of these activities involve gain or loss of water content in our body. About 52 to 55 percent of women’s body weight, and about 60 percent of man’s weight come from water. This pretty much explains the “miraculous loss” of weight in the morning.
This is the sole reason why men are supposed to consume 13 cups of water daily while the women are supposed to drink only 9 cups. It has been observed that food poisoning and severe vomiting and diarrhea result in a loss of a gallon of water per day. This fact explains the sudden drop in the weight of the patients until they get rehydrated since 1 gallon of water (1.7 liters) weighs about 8 pounds (3.6 kg).
But don’t worry, these fluctuations are completely normal. This fluctuation will not hurt a bit if you keep on taking a healthy intake of water.
