World’s First Tri-Fold Smartphone Launches Globally

Huawei introduced the Mate XT as the world’s first tri-fold smartphone during September 2024. The smartphone launched first in China before it received its global release yet consumers may struggle to acquire one. Huawei emerged ahead of Samsung to introduce its ground-breaking device that provides three distinctive display configurations to users.

Users can transition between single-view and dual-view and triple-view display modes on the Mate XT through its “Multiview in One” interface. The smartphone extends to a 10.2-inch tablet display that features a 2,232 x 3,184-pixel OLED screen when fully opened. Users can adjust the device through its dual hinges to switch between a 7.9-inch dual screen setup and a 6.4-inch smartphone configuration. The Mate XT delivers a smooth and responsive performance through its 90Hz adaptive refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling which work equally well when using the device as a phone or tablet.

The Mate XT features its main camera system along with two additional lenses on its rear side. The Mate XT packs a triple camera system that includes a 50-megapixel main camera along with a 12MP ultra-wide and a 12MP periscope telephoto lens which offers 5.5x optical zoom capability and optical image stabilization. The 8MP front camera delivers 4K UHD video recording that produces high-quality images with exceptional detail in every frame.

The Mate XT operates with Huawei’s proprietary operating system while providing users with 16GB of RAM alongside 1TB of storage alongside dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.2. The 5,600mAh battery inside this device enables 66W fast charging and 50W wireless charging capabilities. The Mate XT presents itself in black or red variations while its vegan leather exterior houses a 10.5 oz (298 g) weight. The Mate XT’s advanced technology features a high price tag which sets its retail value at €3,499 (approximately $3,650) beyond the reach of most consumers in U.S. markets.
