If you imagine a huge nuclear power plant but imagine it to be floating out in the sea, then you are thinking about the Akademik Lomonosov. The Akademik Lomonosov is a floating nuclear power plant that is being operated by the Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation (Rosatom).
The Akademik Lomonosov is the first nuclear power plant of its kind to exist in the world, and it has quite a lot of power to offer. The Akademik Lomonosov features two KLT-40S reactor units with each unit being capable of generating 35 megawatts of power. With these power ratings, the floating nuclear power plant will be able to provide enough electricity to cater to a town of 100,000 persons.
Such power is quite crucial for a country that is as massive as Russia with some towns in the North and Far East that are isolated apart from some offshore oil and gas platforms that are owned by the country. With the Akademik Lomonosov, also known as the floating nuclear power plant, these hard-to-reach places might finally be able to enjoy electricity.
Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation’s subsidiary said in a press release, ‘Rosenergoatom (Rosatom’s electric power division) has been authorized to use the nuclear facility of floating nuclear power plant Akademik Lomonosov for 10 years, until 2029.’ According to reports, the floating power plant, Akademik Lomonosov, has a life span of up to 40 years that can be extended to about 50 years.
Such projects are actually good since this means that Russia will be able to cater to the basic needs of its people that are located in off-the-beaten-track towns. Furthermore, nuclear power plants are massive and can deliver much more power as opposed to conventional counterparts. What do you think of this floating nuclear power plant in Russia? Do let us know!
