World’s First 600 HP Hydrogen Engine Could Give Diesel a Zero-Carbon Future

Chinese engine manufacturer Weichai Power has unveiled what it says is the world’s first heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine to comply with China’s stringent China VI vehicle emission standard, marking a significant milestone for hydrogen-powered commercial transport.

The company’s WP15 hydrogen direct-injection engine completed certification testing at the CATARC Automotive Test Center, demonstrating compliance while producing 600 horsepower and 2,800 N·m of torque. The 14.6-liter engine also achieved a peak brake thermal efficiency of 46.8%, making it the first heavy-duty hydrogen engine to reach these combined performance and regulatory benchmarks.

Engineers subjected the powertrain to extensive testing across a wide range of operating conditions, including cold starts, idling, full-load operation, and rapidly changing loads. The evaluation was designed to verify emissions performance, reliability, and durability under conditions that closely resemble real-world heavy-duty use.

Unlike conventional hydrogen engines that inject fuel into the intake ports, the WP15 uses a hydrogen direct-injection, spark-ignited design. Delivering hydrogen directly into the combustion chamber helps prevent issues such as pre-ignition and backfiring, while allowing the engine to operate with a lean air-fuel mixture. The company says this approach also improves combustion stability and overall efficiency.

A key advantage of the engine is its compatibility with existing diesel vehicle platforms. Weichai says more than 90% of the engine’s components are shared with conventional diesel powertrains, allowing manufacturers to integrate the technology into current heavy-duty trucks and industrial equipment with minimal modifications.

The engine is intended for demanding applications, including long-haul freight trucks, mining vehicles, port equipment, steel mill transport, and large stationary power generators. Unlike hydrogen fuel cells, which require extremely pure hydrogen, the combustion engine can operate with lower-purity fuel, reducing infrastructure requirements and potentially lowering operating costs.

Weichai says it plans to accelerate mass production of the WP15 while supporting China’s hydrogen demonstration projects. If widely adopted, the technology could offer industries that rely on heavy-duty machinery another pathway toward reducing carbon emissions without abandoning the familiar internal combustion engine.
