You can be the best photographer in the world, but if you can not take a selfie right, you are missing out on life. Before any of you gets enraged, no you won’t miss out on life, but the art of selfie is considered a subgenre of photography that you won’t get to enjoy.
The 14th Factory in Los Angeles is an empty industrial warehouse converted to a multiple media, monumental and documentary museum. An exhibition was recently held at the 14th Factory that was promoted with the tagline “series of wondrous, over-the-top sets for the perfect selfie.” What would be the first thing any person would do there? Yes, pull out your phone and get a selfie.
All of this went perfectly until one woman stooped down to get her share of the perfect selfie love, which clearly turned out to be a disaster for her and for the museum. The whole idea of the museum is to display socially engaged art.
A show was held at the 14th Factory back in May and Los Angeles Times covered it with the headline “Oh, the selfies you’ll make at L.A.’s 14th Factory, where the art is so social. Our Instagram tour.” Just a couple of weeks ago, the selfie disaster happened, and it went viral as soon as it reached YouTube.
Before you actually move on to the video, you may want to see the artwork itself.
You may not choose to pay $200,000 for the piece, but that is what the sticker says. One of the artists featured in the exhibition Gloria Yu said that “Three sculptures were permanently damaged and others to varying degrees. The approximate cost of damage is $200,000.”
